What’s A Christian?
A Christian is someone who has been brought into a restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ.
The Bible teaches that God made us, knows us, and has rightful authority over our lives. But it also teaches that all of us have sinned — we have lived in ways that ignore God, resist Him, or put ourselves first. Sin isn’t just doing obviously bad things; it’s living independently from the God who made us. Because God is holy and just, sin separates us from Him.
The heart of Christianity is the good news that God has acted to rescue sinners. Jesus Christ, God the Son, came into the world, lived a perfectly obedient life, died on the cross in the place of sinners, and rose again. On the cross, He took the judgement that sin deserves, so that forgiveness could be offered freely. His resurrection shows that sin and death have been defeated.
A Christian, then, is not someone who has made themselves better, but someone who is trusting in what Jesus has done.
How do you become a Christian?
The Bible makes it simple:
1. Admit you need God.
You have done wrong, and you can't fix things with God by being good or religious.
2. Turn away from sin.
This is called repentance. It doesn't mean being perfect. It means being willing to stop living your own way and start living God's way.
3. Trust Jesus.
Rely on Jesus alone to forgive you and make you right with God. He lived the life you couldn't, died for your sins, and rose again. Trusting Him like this is called faith.
4. Follow Him.
This is the start of a new life. You read the Bible, pray, go to church, and learn to obey God. You don't do this to earn His love. You do it because you already have it.
You don't need special words. Just talk to God, ask Him to forgive you, and put your trust in Jesus. In his letter to the Christians in Rome (chapter 10, verse 13), the apostle Paul writes that "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
You won't become perfect overnight. But you will be forgiven, welcomed into God's family, and set on a lifelong path of knowing and following Jesus.
